Running Custom 16 Bit Programs On Windows 95
(Archive Article)

Occasionally an old Windows 3.1 shareware program has difficulty running under Windows 95. There is an undocumented feature that is automatically installed into the \Windows\System directory called MKCOMPAT.EXE. "Make Compatible" will allow you to select the program's .EXE file, and set certain parameters so you can get the program running properly.

If the program actually checks to see that you are running Windows 3.1, then you can enable a feature in MKCOMPAT.EXE to "Lie about Window's version number." When you exit MKCOMPAT.EXE, the system will ask you if you want to save these settings with the executable program. Respond yes, and Windows 95 will apply the changes you made each time that program is started.
