Matrix management involves two chains of command, one permanent, and the other transitory. |
There has been many a discussion about virtual corporations and virtual private networks. The media industry is a prime example of where it has been done right. Editors freelance for publications where they may hire writers across the coast, and then subcontract to those same writers for another project where the need for expertise is reversed. High technology companies are beginning to operate in a matrix, especially when a product roll out involves more than one company. Matrix management involves two chains of command, one permanent, and the other transitory. The roll out team may be one column of a management group made up of one company across several divisions, or several small companies partnering to solve a clients need. The column (permanent chain) forms the structure part of command, and it can pertain to training, promotions, and who signs the paycheck. The rows (temporary chain) of the matrix are the staff: analysts, programmers, network specialists, and help desk support. The rows represent the function of the team assembled to achieve a certain business objective. This can be a roll out of 2000 PC desktops across the country, or putting together the best programmers with another team that can manage the non-technical details to see a product to fruition. Among the rows and columns of these matrices are the makings of virtual corporations. If your company has opportunities for matrix management, then consider working with partners who can help you reach a new client or business object otherwise out of reach. |
